New to the World of Chronic Pain?

Have You Noticed That:

  • Your pain has lasted more than 3 months?
  • Your pain is not going away, in fact it may be getting worse?
  • Your pain is interrupting your daily life!
  • Your doctors or other health care providers that you've seen are not providing you any or enough pain relief?

First thing....DON'T PANIC! Take a deep breath and lets figure out where you might want to start?

WHAT'S NEXT? What should you do now?

Let's start with some basics:

  1. Tell yourself that you will get through this
  2. Take one day at a time, don't overwhelm yourself

  4. Click here to get some immediate relief.
  5. What You Need:

      • A Positive Attitude
      • Willingness to take on Personal Responsibility
      • Courage
      • Assertiveness An Open Mind - Especially to New Experiences and Information
      • YOU must learn skills to manage your chronic pain YOURSELF!
      • The more pain management skills you master, the more YOU control your chronic pain without relying on other people to do something to you or control your treatment. You become more empowered. You are in charge, not your doctor and/or healthcare provider.
      • Some of the more common things that fall into "the things you learn to do for yourself" category are:

        • Ergonomics (sitting and standing properly)
        • Exercise
        • Mind body techniques (breathing & relaxation techniques)
        • Most people seek care for their back or neck pain when the pain interrupts their daily activities, when the amount of their pain increases, continues or if the treatments &/or medicines are not working. There are many different avenues to go, but if you are lucky enough to figure some things out are you own, then you may be able to help yourself decide which path to take.

    • Now that your mind is in the right place. You are ready to take some action!!!!
      • Most of you may want to start with your family doctor, general practicer or internist.
      • If you think you have nerve pain, you may want to start with a neurologist.
      • If you have already been to your family doctor, and your pain is still not under control then you will want to:
        • Find a pain clinic or
        • Find a pain management doctor.

      • Pain Clinics: Many chronic pain sufferers have had very good luck with pain clinics. If you live in a big city it should be easy to find one of these. The experience that I had with a pain clinic, unfortunately, was not so good because the doctor told me that the pain I had in my neck was nothing, but believe me I am sure that there are a lot of pain clinics across the US that help people.

    • Before you read on check out Living with Chronic Pain . This will give you some tips and ideas to help lessen your pain.

    • It is better to have one doctor oversee your pain management, in my opinion. However, until you find the right doctor for you...keep trying different things and doctors until you get your pain under control. Besides just looking for the right doctor you may want to try different treatments at the same time such as:
